You could try the cygwin/X11 version. LyX 1.4.3 is an official cygwin package, so you can install it directly through the setup.exe installation tool you find at <http://www.cygwin.com>. You can avoid installing tetex if you already have miktex (don't pay attention to the warnings from setup.exe and confirm that you don't want it installed). If you don't have already installed cygwin, be prepared to download a lot of stuff, but don't be alarmed as setup.exe will automatically try to install everything needed. The performance of LyX/X11 on cygwin is the same as that on linux, i.e., you don't have the problems you reported about the native version, even if 1.4.3 is a bit slower than 1.3.7 (but this is the same as on linux).
