I made more extensive tests:
 - adding [EMAIL PROTECTED] locale has no effect
 - the part of the word with diacritics is random (the whole word
can be considered in the replacement field, but is is thus declared as invalid
even when correct).

Then I discovered that the default setting of the spellchecker was ispell...
I'm so accustomed to aspell that I just can't imagine other checkers.
Couls aspell be the default spellchecker when detected ?

So I must reconsider my initial follow-up. With aspell I confirm
Asger's original post description. I may add that the checked word is
not highlighted (but the first one in the LyX window) and that the focus
in the document does not self-change. A manual change (after several checks
in the hidden part) restores the status: first checked word highlighted,
current not highlighted.

Sorry for the misleading follow-up, I guess that it can be assumed
that aspell is the standard spellchecker ?
