Hi!

With a great interest I'm reading discussion (from ml's archives, please
CC replies to this msessage) regarding LyX-1.5 which brings Unicode
support and I hope all the devs would be able to resolve everything and
bring new LyX successfully.

Today I read old copy of TUGBoat journal about XeTeX and its nice
features and I visited its web site. It looks that it is developing
nicely and it brings some very welcome features to standard TeX like
support for host-platform fonts - one of the weak points in the present
TeX installations - along with font access and it is getting
multi-platform support.

However, I see that XeTeX uses utf-16 encoding internally, while
upcoming LyX, afaik, settled on utf-8, so I wonder what is the prospect
of future LyX-1.5 to handle XeTeX engine?
Well, I don't know what else is needed to support XeTeX,
but conversion from utf-8 to utf-16 is trivial. For testing
purposes, consider exporting a latex file from lyx
(Menu export->latex or export->latex(pdflatex) and then
use a unicode conversion program on the produced file.
Then you can try the converted file with XeTeX.
