No, quite different.
Word uses a single window for each document, and split for
two views of the same document, what is the behavior of lyx?
Buffers are opened in the current window.

Yes. Buffer's are independent of the windows. Windows are just
additional "views". You can open or close any number of window. The
Buffers won't be killed unless you explicitly kill them or you close the
last window. I believe this is mostly similar to the way (X)Emacs works.
