There is much support for the idea of using an XML format for LyX, and
although the core team have no particular plans at present, there is at
least one person working on it (I forget the name ;-( ) and the core
developers will almost certainly be happy to include it if it is
backwards-compatible (i.e. still supports reading and writing of .lyx
files)
