Please have a look at Chapter 6 of the latest version of Customization.lyx
which is found in the lyxdoc CVS repository (no, it's not in any of the
releases yet). I've spent a lot of time trying to describe how to do this
in a clear, concise way, and I'd actually like some feedback on whether I
was successful. If you can't grab it from CVS, let me know and I'll email
it to you directly as an attachment.
The short answer is "yes, if you are willing to do a bit more work".
