GUI independence is the currently traveled road of getting away from
XForms.  I think there is no need to rehash this discussion because the
decision has already been made. Check the mailing list archives for the
former discussions regarding this.

I for one would be *very* happy if i could use a version of LyX with the
console.  And as long as someone takes an interest in developing one and
actually spends *his* or *her* own efforts, why not? 

And regarding the various toolkit options (gtk+, Qt/KDE/KLyX, etc.):  Why
bother with the frontend when there are already others who'd be more than
willing to do this task.  E.g. KLyX most certainly is not a dead project
but is only in a waiting queue until LyX has reached a degree of GUI
indep'ness which allows for serious GUI porting efforts.  Just be
patient...
