Oops, you are quite right, I'm actually confusing two different issues.
What I mean is, suppose you place the cursor AFTER the last word of
text,
above an equation. The cursor sometimes will stay up there, but on
other occasions (it depends exactly where you clicked the button),
you get TWO cursors, one after the text where you expect it, and one
inside the equation somewhere. The cursor inside the equation is the
active one, but you may not realise this if you are typing quickly.

I would like the cursor to stay where you put it - above the equation!
Unless, of course, you place it in the equation, or use the cursor key
to go down into the equation. The problem of leaving the equation when
you type a space is similar, in that it can lead to typing errors; I
would prefer to use the cursor key to leave an active equation box.

Yes, I just tried that (didn't realise you could do that). It does work,
but mouse selection doesn't. The manual indicates that either should
work - I guess I'll have to change my mouse habits. Still, it would be
unsettling for a new user.

Thanks, thats a useful idea - never thought of that... Maybe the
find-replace
popup could have a mode-less operation, so it could daringly do
precisely
this inside Lyx? Anyway, I will try your suggestion, it will save me
quite a lot of time already.

Thanks to the Lyx team for all their help and support for a great
program.

yours, Peter Drummond.
