As one who is using this indexing facility, some ideas:

1. Allow the characters bounding words to be set somewhere. At least a 
soft-hyphen should be allowed to not bound a word. Also alternatively 
including numbers in a word is often handy. A compromise that could work would 
be (as Garst apparently had in mind) taking the selection as the index entry, 
if there is one.
2. Allow for both "collapsed" and "full" views, showing the index entry 
on-screen or not. (Whole document only)

Raw as it is, already current index support is worth gold!
