In conjuction with this you or Juergen could also work on a lyxrc popup.
A nice, small, multi-tabbed popup incorporating the existing screen font
poup and whatever other features you see fit.

Get the new kernel working, finish the gui-indep work, clean-up just
about everything else. Or at least that's my take (finish my PhD before I
get completely bored with it).
