The version is not changed when the format file is rebuilt. I have, in
share/texmf/web2c a rather actual format file:

Sorry, but that's not true. As i wrote in my original mail, lyx
translates ° into \textdegree when the encoding is set to Latin1, as
then in the tex file I find \ensuremath{\textdegree}. With default
encoding (which encoding is default?) lyx does not translate ° into
\textdegree.
