This was the hint, I needed. At least Allan could guess somehow what I
(more or less clumsily) wanted to suggest :-)
In fact, I wanted to ask: Is autoconf, etc. able to support added
flexibility and how should it be best implemented?
(Didn't suggest any specific way of implementation, though. Writing a
macro was only the most simple expression of the general idea, no need
to think ;-)
