Hi again!

Finally, after days of hard work drinking and coding, you get the status
report from the much succesful third international LyX developers
meeting in Bolzano, Italy.

In the four days the meeting latest, we did some work towards bringing
the future to LyX. The new data structure Asger worked on was introduced
into the 1.1.x branch, and the reader for the old LyX format ported to
this new architecture.

So this means that we now have a proper data structure to hold the text
and all formatting parameters. It's generic, scalable and it works.

The reading supports generic text, floats, most of the formatting
commands, and a bit more. It still needs to parse all the insets
correctly, and the tables are not read either. Ignoring these minor
problems, the code is actually able to read in the User Guide.

Furthermore, we cleaned up in the source tree. Duplicate files were
nuked, the include/ directory disappeared, and other things were made
more logical.

And lastly, we managed to clean up the menu code completely. Now, there
are lyxrc commands for defining the menu of LyX. This means that you can
customize the menus exactly like you want to.

This is done in a clean and platform-independent way, and thus serves as
a great step forward in the GUI independence work.

Also, a few new features were spin off from the clean-up: Now, the
default keyboard short-cut key is listed directly in the menu. So it
says, for instance,

        New C+n
        Open C+o
        Save C+s
        Save as C+a

and so on.

That should help you learn the short-cuts even more.

Next to all of this, of course we tasted the beer, partied, talked with
Alejandro on the phone, and had a lot of fun. Juergen's family was very
hospitable and we were served with lots of fantastic food all the time.

Also, we decided that the fourth international LyX developer's meeting
(the FILM) will take place in Oslo, Norway 2000, and that it will be
five days, rather than four days., so that we can have a bit more time
to work more and have even more fun.

So, please, start collecting the money, or find a sponser for us, and
make sure you can have a holiday, and hopefully you will be able to join
the fun the next time.

The patch will be committed shortly. Also, a bunch of pictures will be
put up on the developers web at some point with a few trivia about what
you see.

Ciao,

Asger, Lgb, Jean-Marc and J|rgen
