Hm. Good question. Tab stops are the place where the cursor stops when you
hit tab. In most text editors, it's every 8 characters. So if you've printed
0-7 letters in and then hit tab, it will take you to column eight. In Word,
tab stops might be every .5 inches, say, although you can set them to
different values. In LaTeX (LyX) you often don't need to use tabs because
you can use tables or itemize layouts instead.

no idea what LaTeX is."
