The problem with this is the "packet sending" method is that some of us make
install every week or more often. Also, as you mention, that only works for
the binaries. Finally, what if 1000 people (ha!)  use it at the same
company or school?

How about instead write "please send an empty e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]" in
splash.lyx. That file is (?) guaranteed only to appear for first time users!

Interesting, but of course nowhere near the full number of users. Mate
posted this at some point, and I think it was only several hundred.

Lars could probably tell us how many people downloaded 1.0.[012] binaries
and sources. Dividing by, say, 1.5 would get rid of those who downloaded
several of those. Of course, not everyone who downloads it ends up using it
(more than maybe once).
