I agree, this would be nice before 1.0...
Anyway here is an easy fix:
Append the dvips option -pp #-# First-last page
to your printer name and you are all set.
It is so simple that a real developer wont even bother any more I guess
and this will go into the hidden, dirty tricks manual on of these days :-)
