Actually, I just did the recommended configure, make, make install with 
not options whatsover.  However . . .

The problem is fixed.  I started having odd problems with gimp, so I 
reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Linux.  Now Lyx seems to work 
okay.  I'm not sure what was wrong with the hard drive, although some 
problems were related to glibc.  But it is fixed now.  

This was not a problem with lyx, but a problem with my os.  Thanks for 
the help
