for a demo, I made a screenshot of test/utf-8.html, which is in
ftp://invisible-island.net/temp/utf8-demo.png
(That's running in uxterm).
For diagnosis of your problem - a copy of (from lynx's build tree)
config.log
config.status
would be helpful.
