Probably a dumb question, wondering if there are any streaming services that support > 720p (i.e. 1080p or 4k) on Linux? Apart from youtube.
So far the ones I can think of don't, due to stupid DRM restrictions. e.g. Netflix, Disney+, Stan, Paramount+, BritBox, Amazon Prime. Seems like same services are even more restricted then others, e.g. this won't work with Google TV even e.g. https://help.britbox.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500012189341-Where-can-I-watch-in-4K- Apparently Netflix is unique, it supports 4K on Windows from Edge or from OSX with Safari <https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444>. I think I read somewhere this (like the other services) requires HDCP to the monitor, I think(???) this might exclude running Windows on a VM. Or maybe it would work if I had a dedicated graphics card for the Windows VM (I don't). Supposedly Curiosity Stream should work, but mainly for documentataries (I think) https://help.curiositystream.com/hc/en-us/articles/218160457-What-do-I-require-to-watch-Curiosity-Stream-in-4K- This is a growing irritation I have, as my Linux system has 4k monitors, but even if I pay extra for 4k (and I would be happy to do so), it seems I can mostly only stream at 720p. -- Brian May @ Linux Penguins _______________________________________________ luv-main mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected]
