The symptoms were that email was not working in both directions.
The actual cause was my IP found its way to Fail2Ban. I can only assume that the mail clients I was using via IMAP (dovecot was the only ban entry) were using IMAP ***prior*** to sending a message to save drafts, add to sent or whatnot. So even though I could have used SMTP(S) the email client was doing its thing and failing at the first issue which was invoking an IMAP connection.
