Hello everyone again,

Problem solved.
Here is what was done.

Removed the kmscon package. This enabled the machine to boot to a tty text 
prompt.
xinit and startx still failed.
Added this config to /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config:
     needs_root_rights=yes
Reboot.
xinit and startx launched successfully.
