Having things on external disks is safe against some problems. But if you

You need to verify the storage before it rots.

A much underestimated problem I believe, with ' half lives of  data on  'shelved' mediums   uncomfortably short;

-SSD's noticeable decay after  three years
-HDD  noticeable decay after  five years
--DVD home burnt noticeable decay after  five years
-DVD factory burnt noticeable decay after  10 years
-M-disk noticeable decay after  25 years
