In fact I also had some issues installing Mint 17 (Ubuntu based) on a machine with Nvidia graphics - but as your machine has a Intel card and you are using Debian version, I did not think it was the same problem, which I had attributed to the Nvidia card. But now you are confirming that the problem could be a Mint installation issue.
