Oh I see – yes data could remain in place when you upgrade. The other option
that you could consider would be to leverage interop and continue to use 2.15.x
servers with 2.16.1 clients. Interop support to 2.15.x LTS will exist for
future releases (2.17, 2.18 etc) up until and including the next LTS (whatever
that may be).

Peter,

Sorry about my way of putting t'he question, but I ment that when upgrading
from 2.16.1 to next LTS series (say 2.18.X, or whatever), no need to
reformatting OSTs and recover data, right?

Best regards

I’m not 100% sure that I am understanding your question correctly here but, if
you are asking “will 2.16.x be an LTS branch then the answer is that this is
not the plan of record”. The 2025 OpenSFS survey will be out shortly and the
results of that may result in more clarity around our plans in this regard…

Hi Peter,

Thanks for yor answer. I suppose, migrating for 2.16.1 to next LTS series is
supported, right?

Best regards

There are no plans to backport Ubuntu 24.04 support for2.15.7 – we’ll still
focus on Ubuntu 22.04 as our primary Ubuntu release for that. 2.16.1 was
considered to be suitable for production usage with Ubuntu 24.04 clients at the
time of its release so that could be an option for you, but please be aware
that there will not be ongoing updates for that branch. The next LTS series
would certainly focus on a newer Ubuntu version.

Regards

Peter

Subject: [lustre-discuss] Using Ubuntu 24.04 as client

Hi all,

We are interested in upgrading our Lustre 2.15.X cluster to use Ubuntu 24.04
LTS as client and we see that Lustre 2.16.1 is supporting it.
Is that version stable enough to be in production or should we wait for the
next LTS suporting Ubuntu 24.04 LTS?
Will Lustre 2.15.7 LTS be supporting Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or must we wait for the
next LTS series?

Thanks in advance
Best regards
