Oh I see – yes data could remain in place when you upgrade. The other option that you could consider would be to leverage interop and continue to use 2.15.x servers with 2.16.1 clients. Interop support to 2.15.x LTS will exist for future releases (2.17, 2.18 etc) up until and including the next LTS (whatever that may be).
