Though there is an ALSA component for controlling audio on Lubuntu, it
doesn't work for multiple audio devices (as I understand it).
I recommend installing the pavucontrol package (and making sure the
pulseaudio package is already installed).
Run (from the menu) "PulseAudio Volume Control" from the "Sound & Video"
sub-menu.
Its "Configuration" tab should show you the audio devices you have.
Then, in the "Output Devices" tab, specify the device you want to use as
the "Set as fallback" device.
You can also set the volume level (including above 100%, if you need).
See if that helps.
If you have further questions, I may be able to help you from there.
In my experience, in general, when you plug-in an audio cable to the
earphones connector, it turns off the internal laptop speakers.
But I have seen on an older machine, where you have to select (via
PulseAudio Volume Control) whether to use the internal speakers, or the
audio out plug.
