Hi Liam,
i'll reply in-line (and try to make less typos this time)
But the LiveCD doesn't have guest additions inside.
Not sure. Some live media are VM-aware.
Ok! Ehm Is Lubuntu VM aware?? Maybe there is an issue regarding VBOX?
i'll dig around and try to fin
And this still doen't explain why
- the LIVE environment runs in 649x480
- the installer runs in 800x600
They don't for me. Same resolution.
HMMMM Is your VBOX on Windows, Mac or Linux?
Mine is running on Lubuntu.
Both without any guest additions
:-)
not sure what i'm missing...
I can't install Guest additions in a LiveCD, can I?
Tricky. Might be possible, actually, if you create a Live USB key with
persistent storage, add the graphics drivers and *don't reboot*, just
restart X.org.
I've done this successfully with an Ubuntu Live USB on bare metal but
with an nVidia display that didn't work usably without proprietary
drivers. It was tricky but it did work.
Hehe now i need to think.. how do i boot a persistent ISO in VBOX?
You mean i need to flash an ISO with pwersistence on a phisical USB and
then boot the VM from that USB?
I hadn't concidered that option yet. :-D I'll give it a try
the Guest Additions are only for the VM. A live CD runs in the VM, but
i
cant install Guest Additions before i boot.
hehe what am i not seeing here?
Well, mainly, what does it matter what res it runs at? Install it and
then you'll never see it again, so why is it important?
Because the 640x480 resolution does not display correct in my case.
And since others also have issues when trying to run a Live CD in a VM
... Well could this be related??
in 640x480 i see something like 1280x480 all garbled. Unusable to work
with.
If people cant view a LiveCD in a VM that's not very conveniant for
them. I mean people try LiveCD's to see how they work before they
install the OS, If the live CD does not work, then they skip the OS and
try something else.
.... OR they get frustrated and bash into this mail list etc.
Understandable but sometimes annoying. And we might be missing the point
of their frustrations. (A bit like Monty Pythons dead parrot sketch)
But OK, so VBOX does not force this, aaah ofcourse, the installer also
manages to run in 800x600, so why doesnt the Live environment then use
800x600... The installer manages to use 800x600 straight from the boot
menu.
For me, it boots into the GUI *then* it asks whether you want to
install or try. I am curious what you are doing that is different.
AH
wait....
It boots into the menu, there we can choose to load LIVE or INSTALL
When i load LIVE, then i get a garbled 640x480 resolution stretched to
1280x480.
when i load the INSTALLER then the installer displays correctly in
800x600 mode.
You see? The LIVE section trips over some bug.. That's what i try to
point out
My appologies if this was not clear. Explaining a bug is probably just
as hard as fixing it.
