Success! Thanks Eric/Andre for your suggestions.
I followed Eric's advice and deleted Chrome in Synaptic; however on the re-install it said "same version already installed" (i386.deb); so that wasn't the problem. I then went into: '/usr/share/applications' and copied the Chrome icon onto the desktop, and it worked, at least allowing me the shortcut. Appreciated, thank you all, Steve
