Can you report the version of hplip if it is installed with `apt-cache policy
hplip`
Also how was the printer and scanner installed. I find sudo hp-setup -i to work
when the GUI doesn't with simple-scan. Also if you have a dvd or usb handy it
could be a good idea to test if this effects vivid as well so it does not go
out with this bug even if from a live session.

The hplip version is 3.14.3-0ubuntu3.2.

For the printer, I simply installed hplip via Synaptic, then Printers: Add Printer found the HP psc 1310 and I selected Connection: HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP).

But as far as I know, hplip didn't have anything to do with the scanner installation. I thought most USB scanners just installed with default modules. For instance, I have another machine with a standalone HP ScanJet 5200C (and an Epson printer). I just plugged in and powered on the scanner, started SimpleScan, and it worked.

I don't have any provision to test this with Vivid here.
