Having set up four P4 machines with Netflix (via Chrome) in the last couple of weeks... I advise tripling the RAM for that adventure. Although I've never actually watched live television on a P4 machine, I'd imagine you'd want the same - at least 1.5 GB of RAM.

It depends on what you use it for.

For MIDI music, 512 megabytes of RAM works, but limits my choices somewhat.

My other daughter uses her machine (with 768 megabytes of RAM) for their family's general usage, and they get by just fine.

The daughter with the 512 meg machine gets by with it okay, but it's their backup machine. Their primary machine is faster (running Kubuntu), and has more memory.
