I, for one, had this issue too. After suspend (to ram) the screen rest dead. It was (still is, with the default setup) on a Samsung 535uc (amd 2 cpu, radeon graphics). It was only solved when the new, with the kernels > 3.2 compatible, proprietarian catalyst drive came out. May be the problem lies there? Radeon graphics?
