Using the alternate install, press F4 and choose minimal install. This will install the basic ubuntu no gui system. Then install lubuntu-core with: apt-get install lubuntu-core --no-install-recommends I also recommend installing policykit-1 to get shutdown and reboot menu entries: apt-get install policykit-1 --no-install-recommends That would be the Lubuntu barebone to which you can add whatever packages you want.
