The machines I observed this major disparity (between Xubuntu and
Lubuntu) on, don't have any sort of graphics acceleration. I will
install xcompmgr, and report my results.
In my testing where I focused on this issue, the amount of RAM was not
an issue (less than 1/3 of it was used the entire time).
I haven't yet tried Lubuntu 14.04 on the 1.7 Ghz machine (which has a
NVIDIA card). I may install Lubuntu 14.04 in place of Ubuntu on that
machine, so I can compare performance compared to UbuntuStudio with
graphics acceleration.
I have Ubuntu/Unity 14.04 installed on a Vaio laptop, having a faster
processor, as well as 2GB RAM, and it seems okay - definitely better
than the Vista partition on the same machine.
The problem I have with Ubuntu on that machine, is that it doesn't use
the entire screen (it uses a less-wide subset of it), and I don't know
how to fix that problem. It is only used for testing, however, so I am
less motivated to solve it.
