Interesting. This workaround seems to solve the issue I have with
xserver-xorg-video-intel and newer kernels (3.7.0+) were screen goes
blank and system hangs.

I see that you filed this bug against xserver-xorg-video-intel. The bug
report (now closed because the OP no longer has the computer on which he
experienced the problem) that I found the workaround in was filed
against the Linux package. Did that seem like a possibility for you,
since the problem appears with newer kernels?
