Pete,

when you reply to messages here could you please put the mailing-list
address too? Thanks!
Back on topic, to see if yours CNC machines will works or not, could
be a good idea to send a message to the LinuxCNC community/forum with
a sample of the program output generated under windows. Surely they
will help you.

It's easy to migrate from xp to Lubuntu for normal office use. Trust me.
For CNC, assuming you are talking about computer numerical control, I
understand your doubts.
Anyway many CNC controlled machine use a set of standard instructions. I
worked with different lasercut from Mazak and other kind of CNC machines
some years ago and the majority were based on G-Code language.

And if you like there are CNC solution based on Ubuntu

Have a look on it.

If you are not talking about this kind of CNC... Well please explain a
little bit more deeply your problem.

Hi,

It's great that we are thinking of offering a better experience to XP
users, but let us not forget about the millions of small and medium sized
businesses out there who will want to 'carry on as they are' with minimal
cost in terms of hard / soft ware, and minimal retraining of their staff.
Take my old company as an example employing 15 - 20 people on one site, have
used XP since it's inception and is now being told by MS that they need to
upgrade their six or seven machines to make them Win7 compliant. If we can
offer something that enables them to carry on without that expense in these
difficult times I am sure that would be a persuasive argument!

Note that to this end I am in the process of clearing out my old netbook
(1200 cpu 1.5gb ram 40gb HDD) to put a clean Lubuntu install on it for a
meeting with my old boss on Thursday to show him how good it is and and a
very reasonable outlay of nothing for either hard or software, possibly
(even hopefully) a few hundred pounds to me for the installation of Lubuntu
on their machines but that is secondary to getting the message out there.

I have no worries over the 'office' functions (email, spreadsheets,
presentations etc).
The bit that concerns me is the CNC bit along with the software to 'port
the specs' to the CNC machine as their specs often come from third party
places who will quite possibly still be using windoze.

I have not had enough experience of Ubuntu CNC to say for certain that
there will not be any errors in then putting those files onto a *ubuntu box,
and as that *is* their business they cannot afford any hassle however small
and the transition *must* be seamless, as any hassle will have a negative
impact on their business and they will end up going out and getting Win7
just for compatibility with their customers.

If anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know ! Although I no
longer work for them I still have a good relationship with the owners, and
do not wish that to change as I cost them time / money or worst of all a
customer!

Just my thoughts

Hi,

Many thanks for the link, i was aware of the CNC (computer numerical
control) based on ubuntu I am unsure of what language they use on a day to
day basis but i will ask on Thurs! I have no worries about the office side
of things (some minor formatting issues in word documents aside) I
frequently use my Ubuntu boxes for files from MS machines so I am familiar
with Libre Office / Open Office.

Thanks again

Pete

Hi,

Sorry for the error!
When I speak to them tomorrow I will ask for a copy of an old non-commercially sensitive CNC file and ask the guys ('n' girls) at linuxcnc for advise before the meeting on Thursday (forewarned etc). Also a CAD (computer aided design) package that is capable of producing these files (freecad or pycad are the 2 I have come across so far), but again I feel the linuxcnc people are probably the people to ask! Another matter of list etiquette on this list is it correct to top or bottom post? (Ubuntu users list is quite finicky about bottom posting) so it is now habbit, but I have no wish to upset anyone!

Thanks for your help and suggestions

Pete
