By "pure", I mean an install that doesn't have any other DE or even a software package installed that could pull in "apt-xapian-index" as a dependency. DEs that would pull in apt-xapian-index can be found by running "apt-cache show apt-xapian-index": Task: ubuntu-desktop, ubuntu-usb, cloud-image, kubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-full, kubuntu-active-desktop, kubuntu-active-full, kubuntu-active, edubuntu-desktop, edubuntu-desktop-kde, edubuntu-usb, xubuntu-desktop, mythbuntu-frontend, mythbuntu-desktop, mythbuntu-backend-slave, mythbuntu-backend-master, ubuntustudio-desktop Lubuntu isn't listed. An example of installing a software package that would pull in apt-xapian-index is the Ubuntu Software Center: apt-get install -s software-center | grep xapian-index gives me apt-xapian-index gir1.2-gmenu-3.0 gir1.2-gudev-1.0 apt-xapian-index gir1.2-gmenu-3.0 gir1.2-gudev-1.0 Inst apt-xapian-index (0.44ubuntu7 Ubuntu:12.10/quantal [all]) Conf apt-xapian-index (0.44ubuntu7 Ubuntu:12.10/quantal [all]) My install is a pure "Lubuntu" and I don't see "apt-xapian-index" listed when I check the output of "dpkg --get-selections". And I haven't been bothered by 100% CPU usage though it was an issue for me when I was on Ubuntu (http://askubuntu.com/q/79481/25656). Is it possible OP is seeing the activity because of another DE (even though OP hasn't logged into it) or a software package?
