Ali,

No luck. Updating (upgrade and dist-upgrade) did not help. Installing 
"Ubuntu-desktop" immediately fixed the issue. After the install completed, 
while still in LXDE, I launched the printer application and it worked fine. 
Sorry, I know I cheated, but at least we now know that the problem is in fact 
caused by a missing package... And I kinda need to print tonight. :-)

I'll play with a raw Lubuntu in a VM later to see if I can figure out what 
package was missing... and to confirm whether or not this is a global issue or 
just an issue with my install.
