The Qt version and gtk+ version use different names/paths for binary programs and config files. So it's safe to install them both and even running both of them at the same time. The desktop manager, however, should only be launched from one of them. The behavior of that desktop icon manager is creating a full screen widget covering the whole root window and paint on it. Although you can launch both of them, only one of them can be visible at a time.
