OK, thanks, it still seems a bit of a bodge though.  There needs to be a
simple program launcher in the lxde/lubuntu panel IMHO.  One often wants
to be able to run something other than 'applications' which have a full
blown menu entry.

The xfce panel 'launcher' for example works very similarly to the lxde
one but has one *big* difference, one can *edit* the properties of the
program to be launched, this allows one to add any old script and also
to add parameters to the command line for already installed
applications available from the menus.
