Ok. Now I can go to Sound and Video -> PulseAudio Volume Control -> Output Devices and see the Port: choice for Speakers vs Headphones. However, changing the Port does not change the output, it is still coming through the internal speaker. There is a section under "Output Devices" for "V20 portable speakers (USB powered) Analog Stereo)" and fiddling with that part of the menu does send a sound effect to the external speakers, so the speakers do work and the system (in a way) is finding them. But I can't get the main audio signal to use them.
