Thanks for having a look at this.

1. On this machine, /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist.

2. I installed linux-firmware-nonfree and re-tested all the non-working cards with no change in results.

3. Since I'm testing a variety of hardware, I didn't have much idea about what to uninstall. But after doing some searching on how to uninstall video driver packages, I encountered these Ubuntu support pages:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video(just an overview without any specific info of interest, except that it points to the next article)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto
I didn't detail this fact in this thread, but for the cards that stall at a blank, black screen during a normal boot, I can configure LTSP to just boot to a shell (successfully) rather than to trying to load ldm, which results in the stalled boot. From the sell I can use the commands mentioned in the article:
    lspci | grep VGA
    sudo lshw -C video
I can get Lubuntu's identification of the current card and find out if it is supposed to be supported (from the next link).

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCards
Although who knows if that supported-cards info will be current. I thought I read somewhere about some distros that newer libraries were causing more regressions for older video hardware.

Try each of the following:

1. Erase /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and reboot.

If the above does not work,

2. Install linux-firmware-nonfree package, and reboot.

If the above does not work,

3. Uninstall all the video driver packages you do not need, leave only
the one(s) that you need, and reboot.
