I agree with you on that but compton is very light on resources. My Lubuntu machine is 10+ years old and it runs full compton effects (transparencies, drop shadows, menu fades) without a blip. It uses only 1-2 MBs of ram. I think once I saw it hit 3 MBs *gasp*. It never registers anything on the processor.
