Hi, Last week this msg popped up during boot: (sorry if this sounds like rambling - new to linux) GNU GRUB version 1.99-12ubuntu5.1 options are: Ubuntu, with linux 3.0.0-1-generic Ubuntu, with linux 3.0.0-1-generic (recovery mode) Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
After 10 seconds it boots normal & all looks as it should. Can anyone tell me why this msg just started to appear? Did not to my knowledge shut the PC down during any kind of install. Here are the steps I have performed in an attempt to make this msg go away. 1) In recovery mode I performed a) fsck - Check all file systems (no errors) b) remount - remount / read/write & mount all other file systems c) dpkg - Repair broken packages d) grub - Update grub bootloader 2) Also downloaded YannBuntu's boot-repair iso. Had to run it in failsafe mode, non failsafe mode just hung each time I tried it. It did indicate one problem fixed & that the document would be avail to view after restart. However after restart from HD I cannot find the document that Boot-Repair generated. Don't remember exactly what it repaired 3) Using Lubuntu install disc booted into terminal (try Lubuntu before installing) & ran *fsck -a /dev/sda1* & from terminal in fully loaded OS ran *sudo shutdown -r -F now* neither of these found any errors. The GNU GRUB version 1.99-12ubuntu5.1 continues to appear @ startup. Should I be worried about this msg? & during shutdown I get this msg: *initctl = event failed* goes by so fast that's all I can read but don't remember getting that msg before, perhaps I wasn't paying so close attention as I am now. on another note: wanted to use *apt-get update* for boot-repair so that I could run it while in terminal (Lubuntu install disc) but I was unable to get my WIFI working. Apparently iwconfig only works for WEP & not for WPA/2. How can I get the wireless working? thanks, rich bloss
