It is my understanding from a recent interview (http://mate-desktop.org/blog/mate-interview-with-linux-luddites/) with Martin Winpress (a contributor to both MATE Desktop and Ubuntu MATE), that MATE is being transitioned to gtk3. Here's a status page: http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/status:gtk3
