Just thinking aloud.... what if it is zram closing down and confusing the virtualisation? That would explain why it does not affect alternate (it doesn't use zram).
I think it needs confirming on 'real' kit as we did have the desktop installing happily on 512Mb when done with hardware. Regards, Phill.
