I'm saying this just personally, not with any backup... But, my brother's camera is a 'silly' pixel size (10 G) .... Try open that on a computer with 8G that has no swap.... I suspect it may fail. When I open them in raw format on my 4G machine... swap (and I mean hard drive swap as well) gets REALLY busy.
I'll get a really big image posted upto my server area for you to have a play with... It may be educational. Rule #1: Always expect the user to do something you had not planned for....
