Very often the target of this first linux install is otherwise discarded hardware.
There's a lot to be said for having the installation CDs work right out of the box. Because we do not have a foothold in the OEM market, manual installation is very often a new user's very first serious exposure to Lubuntu (or Linux for that matter). Editing xorg config files is very 1990's and does not leave a good impression. Adding boot parameters is a little better but still is a long cry from working out of the box.
