Phill, I actually have a half a dozen G3 iMacs, with two or three different processors and graphic chips. Its just that it takes a while do some testing on these, while testing my G4 eMacs (two of those two) and G4 iBook at the same time.
With the G3 iMacs that problem has been, for all sorts of Linux distros over the years, the video settings. There's a long history of having to edit xorg.conf to get the graphical display to work. Just do a search for iMac G3 xorg.conf and you'll have a full page of hits. While standard Ubuntu is too much for a G3 iMac, Lubuntu is perfect. I've done a couple of alternate installs and edited xorg.conf on the G3 iMacs, and they're working pretty well. And I have one Intel-based Mac I can do some testing on if that's needed. But all this testing cuts into my limited free time I live in northern Illinios, USA, and have a 2.5 hour commute to work, one way, each day. Five hours on the road, 10 hours at work, and 3-4 hours testing makes for a long day.
