Concordia University <https://www.concordia.ca/artsci/philosophy.html> in Montreal, Canada is inviting applications for postdoctoral fellowships in the philosophy of logic valued at $50,000 (Canadian) per year (plus benefits) for each of two years. The position does not include any teaching duties. The position is open to candidates who earned a PhD in philosophy or logic in the last five years and meet the eligibility requirements below. Skills in mathematics and computer science are assets. PROJECT: We looking for postdoctoral fellow to join our team for a project on the role or nature of logic, with a focus on inferentialist views and so-called “logical expressivism.” The title of the project is “Logical Expressivism: Material Consequence as the Foundation of Logic.” The principal investigator is Ulf Hlobil <https://philpeople.org/profiles/ulf-hlobil>; collaborators are: Eduardo Barrio <https://philpeople.org/profiles/eduardo-alejandro-barrio>, Robert Brandom <https://philpeople.org/profiles/robert-brandom>, Jaroslav Peregrin <https://philpeople.org/profiles/jaroslav-peregrin>, and Lucas Rosenblatt <https://philpeople.org/profiles/lucas-rosenblatt>. We will investigate the implications of different philosophical conceptions of logic for various non-classical logics, especially substructural logics, including non-monotonic and non-transitive logics. This will require familiarity with sequent calculi and semantics for substructural logics. We will implement computer simulations of the use of different logics in dialogues and in the analysis of natural-language arguments. The position will involve some light administrative and organizational tasks related to the project.
