1st World Logic Day: 14 January 2019

logico vivo, Saharon Shelah.
Do Brasil recebi cartas de: Adonai Sant'Anna, Alexandre Costa-Leite, Cezar
Mortari (enquanto presidente da SBL), Décio Krause, Fabien Schang,
Francisco Miraglia, Hercules Feitosa, Itala D'Ottaviano, Julio Stern,
Marcelo Finger, Marcos Silva, Mario Benevides, Ricardo Silvestre, Rodrigro
Freire, Walter Nascimento. Mais cartas são bemvindas, so me mandar por
e-mail.

Given the current trend towards political populism, manipulation,
intimidation, and disregard for truth, there is a need to re-emphasise the
rational argument, which was born very much at the same time as democracy
itself. (Bob Coecke, Oxford, UK).

Despite its tremendous relevance, it is considered by many as “part of”
something, part of philosophy, part of mathematics, part of computer
science, part of linguistics, etc., rather than a discipline as a whole,
and this concretely affects logicians of all sorts and the communication
with others, henceforth the efficiency of its future impact on the human
society. Even within the austere field of Mathematics, Logic is often
wrongly understood, if understood at all: if some Logic is taught at an
undergraduate level, it often stays down to the study of truth tables and a
misleading interpretation of those. (Xavier Vidaux, Concepcion, Chile)

Aristotle regarded humans as rational animals, and it was Aristotle who
developed the first formal system of logic. Logic has become increasingly
important for our times, for both humans as individuals and humans as
groups. These groups also more and more include the “intelligent machines”
that we create. For this last witness the recent tragic crash of an
airliner where the pilot apparently could not override the decisions of his
auto-pilot.
Logic is an area of study that transcends the humanities, and sciences. It
is not just its own discipline. It depends on other disciplines, and they
depend on it --particularly linguistics, philosophy, mathematics and
computer science.
(Mike Dunn, Indiana, USA)

Logic is a human invention that is used throughout the day, across society
and across all cultures and allows us humans to achieve the very best for
each other, our societies, our world and all the creatures and plants that
share the world with us. Logic can bring us all together. It is also
sometimes attacked, or neglected, in dark corners of societies, and it is
worthwhile for supporters to have an opportunity to remind the world of its
importance. (Mark Reynolds, Perth, Australia)

It is worth noting that for totalitarian states the heresy of heresies is
logic. This idea was first said by George Orwell in his Nineteen Eighty-
Four, the dystopian science-fiction:
“In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you
would have to believe it.”
Hence, the World Logic Day is to celebrate the most essential aspect of our
knowledge and our social life to be open society. (Andrew Schumann, Kraków,
Poland)

What is a correct argument? How can we check its correctness? Can the
fundamental notions in mathematics or physics be based on admissible but
mutually incompatible theories? Are our basic mathematical principles true?
Since the times of Aristotle and the Stoics, Logic deals with these
fundamental questions. Fundamental answers to these problems have been
given by logicians, since the times of Aristotle and the Stoics. Today
Logic is a key tool in AI, computer science, mathematics, linguistics and
philosophy. Gottlob Frege, Kurt Gödel, Andrey Kolmogorov, John von Neumann,
Giuseppe Peano, Abraham Robinson, Bertrand Russell, Alfred Tarski, Alan
Turing, are just a few among many mathematicians, logicians and
philosophers whose ideas on the above problems have had a profound
influence in mathematics, science and social life. A World Logic Day will
help to promote Logic and its benefits in society, and to give students and
researchers opportunities to be made aware of the role of Logic in
contemporary science, and to contribute to this fascinating human
enterprise. (Daniele Mundici, Florence, Italy)

World Logic Day is especially important in our turbulent world as
acknowledgement of the role of logic, argumentation and rationality for the
whole of humanity, as unifying common ground and language for interactions
between people and conflict resolution. (Ioannis Vandoulakis, Athens,
Greece)

>From our ancient history untill the present in the West, but also in the
cultures and religions of the East, the Logos has been considered
characteristically human, and a definition of the laws of the universe. The
human faculty of language and reason is both constitutive of our individual
thought, as well as our common ground and basis of mutual understanding.
The formal study and practice of Logic has therefore been, and will always
remain, a central and most honorable human endeavour. (Paul Dekker,
Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

(Claude
Rosenthal, CNRS, Paris, France)

In modern societies logic is no more merely a foundational scientific
discipline but a crucial part of the everyday algorithms that dominate more
and more our life. Logic is the most universal formal language that allows
to represent and solve real life problems in a more efficient way than
informal reasoning can do. We live in the century of artificial
intelligence and it is the development of logic that is at the heart of the
endeavor to implement human rationality in machines. This development
changes our culture all over the world and it should not be a process only
scientist are engaged with and industry profits from but a process that all
parts of society should be involved in. (Tim Lampert, Berlin, Germany)

World Logic Day is important as the acknowledgement of the role of logic
for better understanding reasoning and modeling decision making process,
and providing a common language. These activities are critical in fostering
cooperation between individuals and more generally interest groups, in
order to solve the major issues for humanity (economic, social, cultural,
humanitarian…). (Dominique Luzeaux, Ministry of Defense, Paris, France)

Logic is both the discipline responsible for the invention of the computer
and the one most relevant to the constraints of rational discourse. It is
pursued in the most fully international way. The recognition of its
importance by UNESCO would be a deeply encouraging moment of light in these
dark times. (Timothy Williamson, Oxford, USA)

Since the central mission of UN is the maintenance of international peace
and security, the international recognition of The World Logic Day by
UN/UNESCO is a necessary (and already late) step towards a public
consciousness about the strategic roles of logic in contemporary society.
After all, logic is independent of personal beliefs and has no political
boundaries. Logic is one of the indispensable common features that can be
peacefully shared by all people. (Adonai Sant'Anna, Curitiba, Brazil)
