Dear Prof. Kossak: (with CC to the 427 members of the Brazilian discussion list on Logic, including many potential members of the ASL)
In reaction to your message to Andrey Bovykin, I forward to you below the correspondence I had with Mrs Carol Hill in 2010. I cannot speak in the name of other colleagues from Brazil, of course, but in my case the content of those messages explain why I stopped subscribing to the ASL in 2010, after several years as a member. I have however still participated since then (as a co-author) to two further editions of the Logic Colloquium (in Manchester and Évora). Many thanks again for your attention and your care, Joao Marcos http://sequiturquodlibet.googlepages.com/ http://scholar.google.com.br/citations?user=fVoG0bYAAAAJ&hl=pt-BR ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Carol A. If you would like to pay your dues through the web, please go to our web site https://www.ams.org/aslrenewal. Your membership number is 500106. If you have any questions, please contact me. Being out of my office in Brazil for so long, this was what I feared --- I wish thus AMS would contact me about the membership preferrably by email, if at all possible, so that I would not allow it to happen again! Does the membership correspond to the period Jan-Dec? I should regularize my situation through your website, as you indicated, and I suppose that the corresponding journals would be sent to me after that, right? Tell me: there used to be a reduced fee for members from developing countries. Apparently this no longer exists for researchers working in Brazil? Joao Marcos Cust. Well, the country is certainly still in the "developing" category --- it could not have changed _that much_ since I came to Austria for my post-doc at the end of last year. I just had a look at your website, and the World Bank's website, to see if I could figure that out, and now I understand that _you_ have in fact instituted a more precise classification, and in that classification Brazil fits among the "upper-middle-income economies" (as it always did), instead of among the "lower-middle-income economies"... Oh well, that certainly *does* make a difference for my personal finances, so I guess I will now consider waiting for November for my renewal, and skip 2010 altogether... All the best, and thank you again for all your care.
